Summary
Dr. Thomas Mengel, APF
Retired Professor of Leadership Studies, Renaissance College (RC), University of New Brunswick, Canada
Thomas is a professional futurist, a writer, and a scholar of leadership studies. He has been facilitating learning around leadership and project management for over 30 years. His degrees are in theology, adult education and psychology, history, and computer science (minor in business administration).
Before joining academia, Thomas has held project management and leadership positions in Europe and North America. He is particularly interested in the connections between futures studies and leadership education. As an active member of the International Leadership Association (ILA), the World Future Society (WFS), the World Futures Studies Federation (WFSF), and the Association of Professional Futurists (APF), Thomas tried to imagine and conceptualize what implications learning about the futures might have on learning about and preparing for leadership processes and positions.
At RC, Thomas had included futures perspectives and futures-oriented learning opportunities into his leadership courses. For example, in addition to imagining what leadership in the future might look like, learners engage in questioning their assumptions about the future and in creating personal and professional alternative scenarios.
After his recent retirement from the University of New Brunswick, Thomas co-founded the Killick Coast North Seniors Co-operative and the Sunrise Funeral Co-operative, thereby actively contributing to the implementation of futures-oriented community designs that he continues to reflect and write about.

Creativity Matters Issue #3, – April 22, 2025
Un the inaugural issue of Creativity Matters, I had proposed a Model of Post-Contemporary Leadership, where leaders and followers demonstrate people and relationship focused attitudes, skills, and behaviours (Mengel 2020, p. 76). At the time, I did mean to leave the application of this model to other researchers who might follow in my footsteps after my retirement. Little did I know that during my final half-sabbatical (September 2022 – February 2023) and following my retirement (March 1, 2023) I did in fact follow my own recommendations. Much had changed resulting in two implementations of community design for the future. I have described the evolution and its results in: Mengel, T. (2025). From Concept to Implementation – Co-operative Community Design for the Future. In: Creativity Matters, Issue 3, April 2025, Atlantic Centre for Creativity Online Journal, p. 78-89.

Sunrise Funeral Cooperative

The First Funeral Co-operative in Newfoundland & Labrador
Sunrise Funeral Co-operative has been officially incorporated on June 21, 2024.
Co-operatives are a unique model whereby the organization is democratically owned and operated by its members. A funeral co-operative aims to meet the needs of its members by offering the same services as a traditional funeral business, except that it is owned by its members, which ensures local control.
Sunrise Funeral Co-operative was created with the goal of purchasing Noel’s Funeral Homes and Green’s Funeral Home, and converting both businesses into a not-for-profit, community-owned, and locally governed funeral community service co-operative.
At the moment, Sunrise Funeral Co-operative does not provide funeral services to the public, but it is already affiliated with Noel’s Funeral Homes in Carbonear, Harbour Grace, and Western Bay, as well as Green’s Funeral Home in Winterton. Services are available in Trinity and Conception Bay through these funeral homes.
You can be part of this historical project by becoming a member online today.

Mission and Purpose
Killick Coast North Seniors Co-operative (KCNseniors.coop) is a non-profit community service co-operative, where volunteers offer services to the public and to members helping them age well at home and in their communities. Located in Pouch Cove, NL, we initially serve the communities in Bauline, Flatrock, and Pouch Cove.
Values
We are a community where everyone has a voice and place to belong. The development of KCNseniors.coop is based on the co-operative values and principles and following the Village Model of the Village to Village Network. We strive to “change the paradigm of aging”. We co-create a “jointly-owned and democratically-controlled” social enterprise valuing “self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity, and solidarity”. We aspire to overcome loneliness and isolation through building “a sense of community” and within a framework of gender equity, diversity, inclusion, belonging, and anti-racism.
